After you've progressed the story to the point where you've unlocked nine of the game's 10 major locations, start backtracking and explore areas you've already been to. You'll find plenty of crafting materials and blueprints out in the open world to keep your weapons on par with your enemies, and there is a multitude of world-building audio logs and journal entries to discover. While progressing the main narrative should be your top priority, that doesn't mean players shouldn't take time to explore every nook and cranny. Dead Island 2 encourages players to return to areas at later points in the game, so don't be afraid to temporarily leave some things behind. This, along with the fact that story quests provide the most experience for leveling up, are great reasons to put a great deal of energy into progressing the main narrative before you waste any time attempting to fully complete an area before moving on.
Unfortunately, many of these won't even spawn until you've encountered that specific type of zombie in the main narrative. The key to each lockbox can be found on unique, named zombies. This is especially true for the game's lockboxes, which typically contain weapons and blueprints. The world of Dead Island 2 evolves as the story progresses, and many of these optional areas and unique zombies won't even appear until you've reached certain points in the story.
However, the most efficient way to play the game is to progress the main narrative whenever possible. Dead Island 2 does a great job of distracting its players with optional areas, mysterious lockboxes, and unique zombies found off the beaten path.
